Breast Cancer Prevention
At a glance:
- Current breast cancer prevention is through regular mammograms, which further increase the risk of breast cancer, especially for at-risk groups.
- Our breast cancer prevention via ultrasound using elastography is gentle without radiation exposure, without increasing the risk of cancer and is also painless.
- We start our preventive medical approach already with patients from the age of 30. Mammography is performed only in cases of suspicion.
Breast cancer prevention without radiation exposure
Gentle certainty. Through elastography.
Breast cancer prevention through a novel procedure: elastography.
The aim of our breast cancer prevention is to counteract the development of carcinomas at an early stage and to use gentle diagnostic methods for this purpose.
Our approach is not only early detection, but also diagnostic and therapeutic support to minimize risk factors for the development of breast cancer.
To complement our existing preventive medicine portfolio we therefore offer a breast cancer prevention program.
With the aid of our new, high-resolution ultrasound examination, even the smallest changes in tissue structure can be detected in the diagnosis of the breast and surrounding tissue. The new elastography method (ElastoScan) is used for this purpose. This can display different tissue hardnesses and thus enables differentiation between harmless and critical changes in the tissue.
Unlike a mammography examination, this gentle procedure is without any risks or side effects, because ultrasound examination means no radiation exposure and is absolutely painless..
Why should a high-resolution breast ultrasound be performed regularly?
Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women aged 35 to 55 in Germany. The statutory health care system provides for mammography examinations as a preventive measure for this, which are to be performed every two years. And this only from the age of 50.
In mammography, the breast is pressed flat between two acrylic glass panes and two X-ray images are taken per breast. This is associated with radioactive exposure, which in turn itself poses health risks and can promote the development of carcinomas.
Especially in women with a family history of breast cancer mammography is performed more frequently than in patients without a family history of breast cancer. This risk group in particular, on the other hand, should avoid multiple radiation exposures..
Breast cancer prevention by elastography in practice
True prevention that minimizes breast cancer risk instead of increasing it.
Our preventive medicine approach
Our preventive medicine approach is not to expose our patients to unnecessary radiation when gentle diagnostic procedures are possible. At the same time, we start prevention much earlier. Since many women develop breast cancer after the age of 35, regular check-ups should begin as early as the age of 30. To enable our patients to do this, we have integrated breast cancer prevention using high-precision ultrasound diagnostics into our range of services.
How elastography works
We use the Samsung HS60 device with S-Detect for Breast, MultiVison and ElastoScan. During the examination, a probe with ultrasound gel is passed along the breast. The tissue is displayed on a screen in real time and special tissue areas are visually highlighted and analyzed. Image printouts can be made at any time. Due to the risk-free and gentle procedure, this examination can be repeated regularly without further ado.
Is the mammography examination not enough?
Regular ultrasound, mammography in exceptional cases.
Mammography only if suspected
Mammography is the imaging procedure most frequently used in Germany for the early detection of breast cancer. The radiological examinations, which take place every two years, expose high-risk patients in particular to radiation, some of which is avoidable. In addition, many people find the examination unpleasant or even painful.
Regular routine examinations for the prevention of breast cancer are necessary and sensible. For this very reason, the diagnostic procedure should be as gentle as possible and not involve any additional risks or burdens for the patient.
This is where we come in. With the help of high-resolution ultrasound diagnostics, we can identify in advance whether and when a mammogram is really necessary and thus keep radiation exposure as low as possible. Only when suspicious tissue is detected should the findings be clarified by additional mammography and, if necessary, tissue samples.
What is the cost of breast ultrasound examination by elastography?
A breast ultrasound examination by elastography costs €198.90 according to GOÄ (German scale of fees for physicians).
For those with statutory health insurance, this examination is a self-pay service, as we are a private practice.
Private health insurance companies may cover this examination, but this always depends on the respective insurance plan.
We can offer our consultation to privately insured patients as well as to patients with statutory health insurance as self-pay patients. You can easily book appointments in our preventive medicine yourself via our online calendar here:
